At Edinburgh airport heading off to Dublin for a light sheet microscopy workshop tomorrow. I have never seen the airport so empty during the day. Girl in the shop was telling be it is like this form now till the Christmas rush. I guess you need to have a good reason to fly off on holiday at this time of year.

Just had a bottle of new mango and lime ribena, most impressed. Wonder of they do is as concentrate.

Just don't care

Stena just do not care about there foot passengers. All the seats are cold metal benches. Food offering and shop also looks quite bad. Hope it is better on the ship.

No Toilet

There is no toilet on this coach! According to the driver as the journey (about 1h20) is less than two hours they are not required to provide one. Agh!

I decided to risk the journey back home as I thought all trains will have toilets, as will the ferry and these big coaches all have toilets. Wrong!

They may not be required by law, but it is crap customer service!

Well for the first time since I was a student I am not flying back to Ireland but taking the train and ferry. I have in the past driven to the ferry but have avoided the train as it use I be a nasty experience. I have 4 changes and one of the trains is a bus. In theory it will take me about 9 hours. Oh and none of the trains I am on allow me to book a seat. I have started an hour earlier that I needed as one of the connections was a 5 min one, so I was worried I would miss it. I hope the trains are at least cleaner than they used I be, I remember sticking to the floor of the Glasgow to Ayr one.

Yeah! Six good old fashioned light bulbs in my room so it is actually light. And free wifi.

Only very smelly people must live in Biggar, so many shops selling strong smelling soaps or fragranced candles.

Had chicken sandwich for lunch. Even though the cafe was called the Llama something they did not have any on the menu. They did also sell mohair wool though.

Not posting pictures live as town has no phone signal.

In town to visit the gas works. I turned off one road to soon and had my first drive through a ford. Had my second drive through one shortly after as had to turn round and come back the same way.

Wonder if the source of the smell was the gas works :-)

Interesting place but no guided tour or knowledgable staff to ask question of.

Turned out it was open doors weekend so the other museums in the town were free (have historic Scotland card so those free anyway). Got pointed at the Albion Motors museam that turned out to close early so just looked at fire engine outside.

Went round Gladstone Court. This was a collection of bits of old shops rebuilt in a big shed. Interesting to wander round. Had a cool telephone exchange.

Headed down the motorway to my hotel: Gilsland Spa, Brampton near Carlisle. Wedding venue / faded splendour type place. But big room and good bed.

Missed a great photo of the sunrise, camera was still in the car!

Off for breakfast.

Post should get some pictures when I breakfast and find bit of the building with some wifi.

Sometimes you just need to make a Scooby snack:

Hummous, chicken, marsden, ham, Gouda, 3 kinds of German sausage, lettuce, salad cream, pastrami, salsa, cheddar, apple sauce, all in a buttered morning roll, served with salt free crisps.

All excited as I unpacked my warranty replacement hot water dispenser that arrived today after two weeks.

And it was dead out of the box. Would just flash it's error code. Not impressed.

Great sunny day. Have the BBQ lit, just waiting for Beth and co to arrive back from the beach. Sausages, kebabs, drumsticks, then cake.

Ok, it is too hot today. I have just had two batches of butter icing split. Second one I might have saved. First I will need to find a use for, perhaps cake mix.

We invaded Chez Marc again, a Lebanese restaurant we found last year. Getting ready for tomorrow's meeting.

While it is nice of a restaurant to have English menus, I do miss trying to decipher the French one.

Prepare for another photo of some poached eggs. I allowed myself to sleep until 11 ish so I was tested. Just found a restaurant that might be called brunch.

Terrine first.

I am off to our work conference in Paris today. Just eating Eggs Benedict at Edinburgh airport.

Quite fun, the eggs have been cooked in a curved mild so are egg shaped with a flat base.

This week has been very busy. We have released a new version of our software, written talks, packed and I also decorated a t-shirt.

Slept badly as usual before the travel, got about 4.5 hours. Will be glad when I am in my hotel room. But that it miles away yet. Fly to Paris, then metro.

Today, Sunday, I am wearing the station house version of the uniform. This is the bit I made to use longer term as a hall costume. My hope is by Worldcon to have a hall costume to wear each day.

Ed took some pictures for me. He has been great as he also applied the hair dye and made running repairs to the dress uniform after I had it on!

Stopped at the Tankerville Arms in Wooler. Whether was getting snowy so I decided not to stop for dinner on the drive so ate a bit later than I like when I got to the hotel. The food was good though.

Starter was mushrooms stuffed with Stilton and honey. Was a bit of a gamble but sounded interesting. Turned out to be very good and nicely balanced.

After the adventurous choice I starter I want do a bacon cheese burger from the special board for main. It was good too. Mum would have approved as they had buttered the roll. The bacon was two thick rashers, very impressing.

Bed was a single (in twin room) but I managed not to fall out. Slept well.

Breakfast was also good. My only comment is the shape of the plate. Long thin plates are harder to eat off. Not a problem for lunch or dinner but before I have woken up properly…

I skipped the bacon this time wary of the salt content.

Off to pack the car and decide what to do for the day.

Made it to my hotel in Wooler. Last bit of the drive was very Christmassy. Just in the restaurant. They gave me a dinner companion attached to my key.
